Wakeboard boats are designed with a number of special features meant to maximize your watersports experience. However, just because you have all these fancy extras doesn’t mean there isn’t more you can do to help create a better experience. Here are our top tips on how to improve your wake, straight from the experts at New England Water Sports.

Driving Wakeboard Boats

Having the right speed is a key factor when it comes to creating a proper wake. If you go too slow, the wake won’t be large enough. If you go too fast, the wakeboarder might not be able to keep up. You have to try to hit the sweet spot, which usually sits somewhere between 20 and 25 MPH. In most cases, the challenge is less about reaching that speed and more about maintaining it. Until you’ve got a good wake going, try to drive as straight as possible.

Trimming Your Wake

When you trim your engine, your bow will rise and your stern will go deeper into the water. While this will result in a larger wake, it will also be steeper and closer to the boat. That’s why you should carefully adjust the trimming until you’re satisfied with how it turns out. While you’re at it, try adjusting your boat’s weight distribution to help create a more consistently shaped wake. Have your passengers arrange themselves as evenly as possible, and use weights to help balance things out where necessary.

Increasing Ballast

Many wakesurf boats have a built-in ballast system meant to help create bigger wakes. If your model lacks this feature, try increasing your overall weight by inviting more people or using strategically placed weights. Of course, it’s important that you make sure whoever is wakesurfing is up to the challenge, so start small and work your way up!
