Boating out in the sunshine is a rewarding way to spend a summer afternoon. However, all that sun can get to you, causing deleterious effects like sunburns, heat exhaustion, dehydration, and even heatstroke. Here are some tips to help you protect yourself from getting too much sun while you’re on your boat.

Wear Sunscreen

One of the most crucial parts of sun protection is applying sunscreen liberally and often. Choose a high-SPF formula that you’re willing to use and apply it 30 minutes before you’re out in the sunshine. A waterproof formula can be good for boating. Make sure that you’re reapplying your sunscreen often.

Stay Hydrated

Getting enough water is also important when you’re spending a lot of time outside in the warm sun. The heat can get to you quickly, causing you to sweat and lose valuable water and electrolytes. Make sure that you’re replenishing the water you lose and keep extra drinking water available on your boat for all your passengers.

Dress Appropriately

Some folks might want to wear a bikini or swim trunks and nothing else in the heat. However, you’re more likely to stay cool and prevent sunburn by wearing light-colored clothing in natural and breathable fabrics, such as linen or cotton. Long sleeves and pants can prevent the sun’s heat from reaching your skin so that you don’t get as hot. They can also prevent sunburn.

You should also wear a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face and neck, along with a pair of UV-rated sunglasses at all times.
