Boating with pets can be an extremely rewarding experience, or a very stressful one! While temperament can be the cause of some anxieties, typically, how much preparation and practice an owner puts into introducing their pet to boating is what will make or break the trip. To ensure your first boating trip with your pet goes off without a hitch, check out our helpful tips below.

Supplies

Want to take your pet on your next trip out on the water? Then you’ll need to purchase some unique supplies to ensure they have everything they need while out on the water. For example, just like all of your human passengers, your pet will need a fitted life jacket to help protect them from falling overboard. You’ll also want to bring along some toys and treats to keep your pet occupied, as well as a few cleaning supplies to help pick up after them when they use the bathroom. Don’t forget to also bring a few bowls for your pet’s food and water, as well as something that can provide them with shade when the sun overhead gets too hot.

Introductions

You don’t just want to pull your pet aboard your boat and then take off into open waters. Your animal will need time to acclimate to their new surroundings, and it’s better to take things slow to ensure they view boating as a positive experience. We advise taking your pet onto your boat for the first time when it’s parked at home or sitting at the docks. Allow them to explore while you provide treats and words of encouragement. You may need to repeat this process several times before your pet will relax on your boat and trips out on the water should be kept very short until your pet seems completely comfortable on board your model.
