Boating is a rewarding pastime, but it is not one without risk. Safety is as important when operating a boat as it is when driving a car. You need to be prepared for emergencies and capable of reacting quickly, and your boat needs to be in good working order. Here are some boat safety basics to keep in mind.

Pack For Emergencies

Failing to have the right safety equipment on hand can get boaters into trouble very quickly. You should ensure that you have both a throwable life ring on board, along with enough personal flotation devices (PFDs, also known as life jackets) for every passenger. A first-aid kit is a must, as is a fire extinguisher. Keep a battery-powered radio handy so you can get information if your other tools fail.

Stay Sober & Alert

Operating a boat while tired or intoxicated is a terrible idea, but so is operating it carelessly. You should always be sober, focused, and ready to react to anything ahead of you in the water. Remaining vigilant can keep you and others safe.

Keep Your Boat Maintained

If you don’t maintain your boat, it will fall into disrepair, which can cause it to break down on you without warning. A breakdown is bad enough on its own, but what if it happens in a situation that puts you in jeopardy? Follow the guidelines in your owner’s manual to maintain your boat and get in touch with the New England Water Sports service department if you ever need assistance with boat repairs.
